Welcome to Friends of Mahratta

Mahratta has been listed with the State Heritage Council and is acknowledged as one of the finest Georgian Art Deco mansions in Sydney. It has one of the few remaining gardens designed by Paul Sorensen in the Sydney Metropolitan area. He also designed the Blue Mountains gardens “The Everglades” and “The Braes”.

The Friends of Mahratta was established in 2010 to raise funds for the care and preservation of the house and garden as well as opening the property for community use and enjoyment.

Mahratta began as a family home and was later owned by the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac) so opportunities for the public to visit were limited. Friends of Mahratta enjoy giving the public the opportunity to visit this magnificent house and garden.

Our main fundraising event has been ‘Behind the Wall’ normally held in Spring. In 2018 we won’t be holding the event and will have three days instead of two for people to come and visit the grounds and tour the house. The house tours are popular.
